1. Report on PATAT 2000

PATAT (Practise and Theory of Automated Timetabling) 2000 took place in Germany from 16th - 18th Auguast 2000. This is the third PATAT conference. The first event was held in Edinburgh in 1995, the second event in Toronto was held in 1997. The third conference was hosted by Fachhochschule Konstanz - University of Applied Sciences. Wilhelm Erben was co-chair and takes much credit for organising a very enjoyable conference. Edmund Burke, was the other co-chair, as he was for the previous PATAT conferences.

Three plenary talks/papers were presented:

Brucker, P. (Osnabruck, Germany). Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling and Timetabling

White, G, M. (Ottawa, Canada). Constrained Satisfaction, Not So Constrained Satisfaction and the Timetabling Problem

Carter, M. W. (Toronto, Canada). A Comprehensive Course Timetabling and Student Scheduling System at the University of Waterloo

The remainder of the conference was split into a number of themes; these being

University Course Timetabling (12 papers)
Examination Timetabling (5 papers)
School Timetabling (7 papers)
Employee Timetabling (10 papers)
Other Timetabling Problems (6 papers)
Graph Colouring (2 papers)
Practical Issues and General Concepts (7 papers)
Vendor Presentations (3 papers)

Total Numbers of papers presented = 55

A full list of papers is given at the end of this digest

The conference follows the normal format in that papers presented (and published in the proceedings) at the conference are a mixture of full papers and (extended) abstracts. These proceedings are available from Wilhelm Erben (erben@fh-konstanz.de). Wilhelm can give you the cost of the volume but they will only be available until the current print run is exhausted.

The authors are now invited to present full papers by 29th September. These papers will undergo another referreeing process and selected papers will be published in an LNCS volume. This is expected to be available n Spring 2001.

For more information on the PATAT series of conferences see http://www.asap.cs.nott.ac.uk/ASAP/ttg/patat-index.html. At this site you will find information about the three PATAT conferences. The web site also contains a full list of papers that were presented at previous conferences and the papers presented at PATAT 2000 will appear shortly. However, they are also listed below.
